Candlelight Kids – Acrylic painting

Portraits, Sunset, Temples and Monks

Hoi An, Vietnam, an ancient town located in Viet Nam’s central Quang Nam Province, the city is located on the north bank near the mouth of the Thu Bon River.

One of the main tourist attractions is a boat tour by night accompanied with the lighting of floating candles.

It was a very pleasant and photogenic sight to see the countless little candles glowing on the river however unethical it now seems.

The charming children sell candles in cardboard candle “boats”. They then place them in the river and you have the pleasure of watching your boat float in the water on the river which passes through Hoi An.

If you sit in a bar at the side of the river you can see a fairly active form of recycling. Mums, Dads, Aunties and Uncles all fishing the candle boats out of the downstream river, to transport back upstream, to sell on again. Unfortunately not all are collected and remnants are visible in daylight.

The charming kids will also come up to you at the bar politely asking if you would like to buy a candle, hence the painting……

An original acrylic painting on Schoellershammer 4G line and wash illustration board by the Artist Martin Tibbs.

The board is 1.5mm thick and the sheet size is 47.5cm high x 18cm wide. Archival quality and acid free.

There is a festival of lights held on the 14th day of every lunar month in the old town of Hoi An, the electric lights are switched off for the whole night.
